About PSA Screenings
A prostate specific antigen (PSA) test measures the level of PSA, a substance made by the prostate, in the blood. PSA levels may be elevated due to various conditions, such as cancer or other medical ailments, that can affect the prostate. These levels can also be affected by certain medical procedures, certain medications, an enlarged prostate or a prostate infection.
As a rule, the higher the PSA level in the blood, the more likely a prostate problem is present. But many factors, such as age and race, can also affect PSA levels. Your doctor is the best person to interpret your PSA test results, and if your screening is abnormal, your doctor may recommend treatment or a biopsy.
Who Should Be Screened
PSA screening is generally recommended to men over age 55, unless you are at a higher risk for prostate cancer due to individual factors, in which case it may be recommended that you be screened at a younger age.
You should talk with your doctor to discuss your overall health, any medical conditions, family history, or other concerns, to find out if screening is right for you.
