About Cardiac Scoring
Cardiac scoring, also called a coronary artery calcium (CAC) score, is a specialized CT scan that measures the amount of calcium in the walls of the coronary arteries. Calcium buildup can be an early sign of coronary artery disease (CAD), even before symptoms appear.
This test is non-invasive, painless, and quick—providing a score that reflects your level of risk for a future heart event such as a heart attack. The higher the score, the greater the chance of significant coronary artery disease.
Who Should Be Screened
Cardiac scoring is often recommended for individuals aged 40 to 70 who are at intermediate risk for heart disease and who do not yet show symptoms. It’s especially helpful if you have risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking history, or a family history of heart disease.
This test is not typically recommended for those with known heart disease, or for individuals at very low or very high risk, where other diagnostic or treatment steps may already be in place.
Cardiac scoring is a valuable tool to guide your provider in determining the need for lifestyle changes, medications, or further testing—and to give you peace of mind or motivation to take proactive steps toward heart health.
